The Literary Review of Canada is a not-for-profit book reviews magazine based out of Toronto that publishes 10 issues a year. I worked at the LRC in various editorial roles from 2013-2018, and served as its Managing Editor and Art Director (and occasional designer) from 2015-2018, and had aimed to revamp the magazine’s story packaging while maintaining its established identity.
Since its first issue in 1991, the LRC has prided itself on being a place for original illustration, and during my tenure I directed some 200 editorial illustrations and dozens of covers. The magazine, at 11×14 inches, like its fellow book review mags, is quite large, and I endeavoured to use as much of the canvas as possible for the covers, which I thought had been underused real estate.
I was lucky, while at the LRC, to work with some rigorous young illustrators, and I’m thankful to each of them for the keen work they delivered on a shoestring budget.
